Houston Co. Arts Council - Fall 2010 Class Offerings

 Houston Co. Arts Council is pleased to once again offer music and dance classes, lessons and workshops with professional instructors.

 Fall 2010 Dance classes will begin Tuesday, September 14th, at the HCAC downtown building in Erin. (There is a tentative schedule conflict which may push the start of dance classes to September 21st.     Students will know before the semester begins.)

 Fall 2010 Voice lessons will begin September 14th.  Voice lessons are offered on Tuesdays 4:30pm-9:00pm and Thursdays 4:30pm-9:00pm (if needed).

 Fall 2010 Piano Lessons started Monday, August 23rd, but there are still slots available.

 Class prices will depend on the number of students per class.  (See fee schedule below.)  Each class must have the minimum number of students (4) in order to make.

1.    Payment in full due at the first lesson

2.    Monthly payments (first payment due at the first lesson of each month)

Each student will sign a contract with the instructor at the first class agreeing to continue lessons for the duration of the semester. 

Prices are based on a 13 week semester.  If a student misses a class, payment is still expected.

Fall 2010 Class Offerings

 

 

TUESDAY EVENINGS

That’s the Show Biz! (ages 2nd-5th grade)                                          4:30-5:00pm

This class will introduce younger and beginning actors to the world of theatre. Students will participate in theatre games and learn basic stage terminology to gain a better understanding, and build confidence in performing. Participants will also perform several short scenes and skits, geared toward a presentation during the final week of classes.

Student limit: 10  Class length: 30 minutes

 

Beginning Adult Tap – part II (ages 18 and up)                               5:00-5:45pm

A great introduction to tap dancing for adults!  Students continue to work on the basic tap steps, and use them in exercises and routines.  Class will focus on technique, quality of sounds and performance.

**Students will be required to purchase tap shoes for this class.  Class length: 45 minutes

 

Zumba (ages 15 and up)                                                          6:00-6:45pm

Join the newest fitness sensation blending international music with easy dance moves to create an exciting and rewarding class!  Zumba has been called “exercise in disguise” and “fitness made fun”. New this semester: bring your 1-, 2- or 3-pound hand weights. We will be incorporating toning into our workout!  *Student limit: 10  Class length: 45 minutes 

 

That’s the Show Biz! (ages: 6th-9th grade)                                       6:45-7:30pm

A great way for new actors to get their feet wet, this class will cover the basics of theatre production – everything from blocking to Broadway. Students will learn stage terminology and etiquette, participate in theatre games and exercises, and use their newfound skills in a short performance at the end of the semester. Come have fun and let your inner actor out!

Student limit 10  Class length: 45 minutes

 

Musical Theatre Dance (ages 16 and up)                                      7:30-8:15pm

This class will introduce beginning students to jazz dance technique, and reinforce technique for more experienced dancers. Class will begin with a warm-up, followed by technique exercises and learning new steps, and students will use their new knowledge to learn routines to songs from Broadway musicals, as well as popular music. A great way to become more confident in dance and learn moves that you will use performing in shows as well!  Class length: 45 minutes

 

Intermediate Tap (ages 15 and up)                                               8:15-9:00pm

For the more experienced tap dancer, this class will challenge students with more complex steps and routines. Students will further explore the rhythmic aspect of tap dance and incorporate faster footwork, while still reinforcing and strengthening technique and quality of sounds.  New students-please consult instructor for placement.  Class length: 1 hour

 

Private Vocal Instruction with Nathan W. Brown

Whether you want to prepare for that next audition or role, or if you just want to sing more confidently at church, private voice lessons are for you! Lessons will involve study of vocal placement, vowel modification, consonant usage, breathing techniques and musical interpretation to improve overall vocal quality. Students will learn through vocal exercises and song study, including the preparation of audition material (if interested). Lesson times will be decided upon by the student and the instructor.  Returning students will receive first priority. 

Tuesdays 4:30pm-9:00pm

Thursdays 4:30pm-9:00pm (if needed)

Lesson length: 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 1 hour

 

Private Piano Instruction with Whitney Petty

Students will learn the keys on the piano, proper playing technique, and the rules of music theory in order to read printed music.  Lesson times will be decided upon by the student and the instructor.  Returning students will receive priority.

Mondays 4:30-9:00

Lesson length: 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 1 hour

 

 

 

NEW THIS SEMESTER!

 

Audition Workshop with Bryan J. Wlas and Nathan W. Brown

Do you get butterflies in your stomach when the time comes to audition? We can help! Come to the audition workshop and get help picking a song and/or monologue, or get coaching on the material you already have. This is your chance to practice your audition selections before the actual musical auditions (Be watching for audition info.). Insiders tell us that workshop participants will also have a chance to learn the audition dance and have a chance to practice it before auditions!

Class fee: $5.00 per person                 Workshop date/time: November 13th, 1:00-4:00pm

 

Acting for Adults (ages 16 & up) with Bryan J. Wlas

Come explore the world of acting in this fun class, which will incorporate warm-ups and theatre exercises, as well as solo and duet/group work to strengthen your acting technique and gain more self-confidence. Participants will take part in theatre games and exercises, and use those exercises to explore monologue and scene work. A great way to warm-up for the next production season!

Class fee: $8.00 per person             Workshop date/time: Sat.  Sept. 25th, 1:00-2:30pm

 

Adult Ballet (ages 16 & up) with Bryan J. Wlas

For those curious about ballet, or just wanting to refresh after previous lessons, this class will give participants a taste of ballet technique and style. Ballet helps develop balance, strength and flexibility, and is the basis for most other forms of dance. Class will consist of a warm-up and barre exercises, as well as learning new steps to incorporate into a short routine. 

Participants will need ballet shoes or socks for this class. 

Class fee: $5.00 per person             Workshop date/time: Sat. Oct. 2nd, 1:00-2:00pm

 

Tap Dance for Kids (ages 7-12) with Bryan J. Wlas

Come let loose those dancin’ feet and tap your troubles away! Students will be introduced to the basics of tap dance in this fun workshop. Participants will use their new tap skills in learning a short routine which we will show off at the end of class!

**Students will need special shoes for this workshop

Class fee: $5.00 per person             Workshop date/time: Sat. Oct. 9th, 1:00-2:00pm

Nathan W. Brown

Nathan W. Brown (Instructor of Voice) is happy to return to Houston County to teach his third year of Voice Lessons.

In the past few years, Nathan has given private voice lessons to over 30 students in Houston and Dickson Counties.

A native of Sterling, IL, Nathan is a graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance. Recently, Nathan has served as Musical Director for Houston County Community Theatre productions of My Fair Lady, Some Enchanted Evening, Annie Get Your Gun and Hello, Dolly!.

As Resident Musical Director for The Renaissance Center in Dickson, Nathan has worked on more than 25 productions, including Anything Goes, A Chorus Line, Cats, Oklahoma!, Annie, The Music Man, Children of Eden, Smoke on the Mountain and Once Upon a Mattress. Nathan's other favorite Music Directing credits include All Shook Up, Seussical, Pirates of Penzance, Pump Boys and Dinettes, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, The Will Rogers Follies, Forever Plaid and Jekyll & Hyde, at theatres including Bigfork Summer Playhouse (MT), The Round Barn Theatre at Amish Acres (IN), Stage Door Theatre (FL), Bearcreek Farms Resort (IN) and Illinois Wesleyan University (IL).

Whitney Petty

Whitney Petty (Instructor of Pianois from White Bluff, TN.

A graduate of Belmont University (2009), she holds a Bachelor�s degree in Music Education. She has studied piano with Dr. Robert Marler, the current pianist for the Nashville Symphony.
In 2007, she took part in a choir tour in China with Belmont University Chorale, the university's premiere touring choir.

In addition to teaching piano lessons at both The Renaissance Center and Houston County Arts Council, she accompanies theatrical productions with The Renaissance Center, Houston County Community Theater, and Cheatham County Community Theater.

She is also a member of The Renaissance Center Chamber Choir and took part in a choir tour to England with them in 2010. Her professional memberships include MENC (The National Association for Music Education) and Kappa Delta Pi (International Honor Society in Education).

Bryan J. Wlas

BRYAN J. WLAS – DANCE/THEATRE INSTRUCTOR

A native of Woodridge, Illinois, and a graduate of Millikin University with a BFA in Musical Theatre and a Dance minor, Bryan has been involved with the Houston County Community Theatre since 2007, and has taught classes in Houston County since 2008. He has choreographed several shows for HCCT, including My Fair Lady, Some Enchanted Evening, Oklahoma! and Annie Get Your Gun, and he directed and choreographed Hello, Dolly!.

 

Bryan is also the Resident Choreographer for the Renaissance Center in Dickson, where he has been active in the theatre department since 2005. You may have seen him and/or his choreography on stage there several times as well, in shows such as A Chorus Line, A Grand Night for Singing, Smoke on the Mountain, The Music Man, Snoopy!!!, Cats and Little Shop of Horrors. Bryan’s choreography has also been seen at the Bigfork Summer Playhouse in Montana, Round Barn Theatre in Indiana, Lees-McRae Summer Theatre in North Carolina and SummerStock at the University of Findlay in Ohio. As a performer, Bryan has worked throughout the eastern United States and Western Europe.
